Our Scout Group is run entirely by a village of volunteers

Without the help of parents, friends and community Members supporting us with their time, our Scout Group just could not continue. We are all driven by:

• an appreciation for what Scouts has given to us and/or our kids
• a desire to give back to the community
• passion for the outdoors and Scouting
• wanting to support local young people to learn, develop resilience and skills - and to have fun!

Become a Scouts Leader

At 1st Berowra Scouts, we currently room for more kids in all sections, we just need more Leaders so we can move more kids from the waitlists. To get more local kids into the adventure, we’re offering a direct fast-track: volunteering as a Leader will move your child from the waitlist straight into their age group section.

What’s Involved in Becoming a Leader?

• No Prior Experience Necessary: You do not need to be an expert camper or outdoors person. If you can help manage a project or organize a household, you already have the skills needed. All leaders are mentored and trained in youth engagement, program planning, child safety, and risk management.

• Child Safety & Compliance: Like all adult volunteers in Scouting, you will need to hold a verified volunteer Working With Children Check (WWCC, free of charge) and complete a standard Scouts NSW National Police Check and introductory child-safety e-learning.

• Structured Training: Training combines self-paced online modules with hands-on mentoring during regular section nights, plus practical weekend skills courses. Basic leadership qualifications are typically completed over 2 to 3 months.

• Nationally Recognised Qualifications: Through the Scouts Australia Institute of Training (an Enterprise RTO), your leader training and experience can map directly toward accredited business, leadership, and management certifications recognized outside Scouting.

• Commitment & Shared Workload: You will never lead alone! We use a co-leadership team model (2–3 parents per section) so you can share duties and step in for each other during busy work weeks:

  • Weekly section meetings during school terms (approx. 1.5 to 2 hours per week—no school holidays!).

  • A monthly Leaders’ meeting to plan term programs.

  • Occasional weekend adventures (such as day hikes or weekend camps spaced throughout the year).

• Key Attitude: Enthusiastic, keen to see kids learn through adventure, and ready to have fun outdoors.

• The Personal Payoff: Share unforgettable experiences with your own children (or lead another section if your kids prefer their independence), make great local parent friends, and build proven team-leadership credentials.

Other ways to volunteer

We are always needing more help - the more hands we have, the lighter the load for everyone. While we are always keen for more new Leaders for our sections, there is something to suit everyone, including roles that you can do remotely from home for less than an hour per week, such as fundraising, accounts, maintenance and promotions.
